We had a fabulous time seeing new and familiar faces at The Secret Fork #8 over Labor Day weekend. In addition to our Original, Maple-Bacon, and Gruyere-Parmesan pretzels, we debuted two new flavors: Garlic Lover’s and Chocolate Chip!
Think of Garlic Lover’s as the Bavarian version of your favorite pizzeria’s garlic knot. Fresh garlic, Italian parsley, and olive oil are blended together, then brushed on our twists before they go in the oven.
Chocolate Chip takes the chocolate-covered hard pretzel and turns it inside out: semisweet morsels are baked into the dough for a gooey, salty-sweet taste sensation in almost every bite!

There’s nothing like an authentic German pretzel — glossy, crisp, and coppery brown on the outside, fluffy and doughy on the inside. I’ve been working on creating a bite of Bavaria here at home, and I’ve found that the key is lye, or as the Germans call it, “lauge” (hence the term “laugenbretzel”). Yes, lye is toxic and can burn your skin. But dip the pretzel in a lye-water solution before baking (make sure to wear gloves); the toxicity of the lye bakes off in the oven, and you’re left with the ultimate comfort carb.
